The evolution of Vietnam’s architecture

Beginning nearly 1,500 years ago with the oldest temple, Trấn Quốc Pagoda, Vietnam showcases a diverse and colourful history in architectural design.

But – even before the rise of intricate temples, Vietnam consisted of humble homes shaped like turtle shells and boats built from bamboo and wood upon low stilts to protect the people from tigers and wolves.

As time  continued on, Chinese culture played a heavy role in the influence of building design in Vietnam which featured ornamental roofs, doorways and banisters on multi-level towers. The influence of Chinese dynasties proceeded and structures slightly morphed over time and began including outdoor gardens and walking areas from one building to another.

Fast forward to the late 19th century, Vietnam was colonised by France and with this came European architecture, specifically seen around Hanoi, Vietnam where the streets are lined with charming tall, narrow buildings. Amongst the tight neighbourhoods, Hanoi also boasts some of the French’s most magnificent constructions built during an era of art deco style – such as the infamously known Hanoi Opera House.

With a wide array of collaboration styles over the years, modern Vietnamese architecture is now created from a diverse pool of inspiration and is truly sweeping the nation with breathtaking and unique trends.

Modern building in Vietnam possesses big vision; developers are not merely building one structure but rather constructing entirely new communities entailing a range of neighbourhood facilities such as international hospitals, schools, shops and restaurants. The smartly designed mega communities showcase lots of green space intertwined with modern infrastructure to provide residents with tranquil yet efficient living space.

Right on the edge of Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), sits the luxury development of Sala Sarimi Apartments and Villa Residence, which illustrates Vietnam’s designs in modern “mini” cities. Inspiration from Singaporean luxury design standards and mixed with natural light, the development by Dai Quang Minh JSC offers residents a livable community that encompasses the perfect blend of contemporary and greenery.
