5 Halloween ideas for your home

Fill your home with these ghoulish Halloween ideas.

Halloween is traditionally a pagan festival. Celebrated on 31 October it originated in the west but today is enjoyed worldwide. For some it is just another excuse for a party so if you are thinking of having a throwing a Halloween event then kit out your home with these eerie ideas.

1. Start with a spooky front door.

Start the haunted Halloween vibe off at your front door. Adorn with anything scary. This could be skeletons, fake cobwebs or even spiders. You could even blast some creepy music to really add to the scene.

2. Carve some pumpkins.

Halloween would not be complete without a carved pumpkin or two. Called ‘jack-o-lanterns’ this long tradition is believed to have originated from Ireland. Carving a pumpkin isn’t easy, so give yourself time and be sure you have a sharp knife to carve with. Home carving kits are available but you can carve any shape you want from a cat, scary face to even your favourite super hero. Place a candle inside and leave in a dark corner of your home or by the front door.

3. Serve scary food and drink.

Make up a punch of a pungent orange or green and place fake eyeballs in the bottom. Serve food that looks too vile to eat. There are countless ideas on the Internet for inspiration. Carve a watermelon into an unwell face with other fruit coming out its mouth like it is being sick. Create fingers with hot dogs or shape sandwiches into bats or ghosts.

4. Create an eerie environment with the lighting.

You want your home to be dark so monsters have places to hide! So avoid bright lights and replace your light bulbs for green and orange ones. Buy some Halloween inspired fairy lights of skulls or ghosts to make your lighting a feature. Remember to show off those carved pumpkins too.

5. Collect some scary costumes.

A dressing up box filled with costumes will provide some entertainment for your guests. You could set up a corner entirely to this with props for people to take photos on their phones too. Think witches hats, comedy glasses, pirate hats, in fact anything goes. Place them all together in one box and make it even more scary like by making the box into a coffin for added fun.
